Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a University of Sydney student to join the club?

No. The club is open to anyone.

How much does it cost to join?

Annual membership to SUCanoe is $30 for students and $50 for community members.

You also need to join Sydney University Sports and Fitness, who provide many of our facilities as well as personal injury cover in case you should ever get injured on our trip.

Membership to  Sydney University Sports and Fitness is $60 for students and $65 for community members, and allows you to join the aquatic centre, gymnasia, and many other sports clubs.

Do I have to pay to hire paddling gear and trips?

Once you sign up you do not have to pay anything additional to hire club gear and boats.
Canoe polo and rolling sessions do involve a pool hire fee.
Weekend trips will require you to contribute to petrol money and cover the costs of your own food, camping and so on.

What should I wear?
  • For a hot summer day on the harbour, a pair of board shorts might be enough. Also bring sunscreen, caps and a litre or more of fresh water.
  • a long-sleeve thermal top to keep you warmer (merino woolen ones are the warmest when wet. Kathmandu probably have the lowest prices in town).
  • a cheap nylon raincoat to keep the wind off, or a more paddling specific splash top/semi-dry top
  • a long-sleeve wetsuit is essential for river trips much of the year round (Anaconda has some new ones for $80-$100. For cheaper second hand stuff try Gumtree or the charity shops like Vinnies)
  • if you’re more serious about paddling on rivers you will have to invest in a dry top (>$200 from shops like Horizonline. Let us know if you need advice or club discounts).
Is it a recreational or competitive club?

Sydney University Canoe Club is mostly a recreational club but our members do also compete in long distance or canoe polo events.

How often does the club go on trips?

See the event calendar for all future trips

Do I need to be able to swim?

The ability to swim is mandatory for any whitewater trip.

The ability to swim is not a prerequisite to going on a flat water trip, however, this is at the discretion of the trip leader.  Provided you are wearing a life vest, paddling with an experienced company and inform the trip leader in advance that you cannot swim this should not be a problem.

Am I insured for injury if I join the club?

If you are a paid-up member of the club and SUSF, and the trip is an advertised club event, you are insured under the university’s personal injury policy. This will cover some of the costs of treatment and therapy.

Do I need experience?

There are no experience requirements to join the club. We run trips for beginners through to advance levels.
